Ride to The Turning Point Suffragist Memorial in Occoquan Regional Park

Come join us as we explore the Burke & Occoquan areas. The Turning Point Suffragist Memorial is located in Occoquan Regional Park, which was part of the historic prison grounds where the infamous Occoquan Workhouse was located. Scores of Silent Sentinel suffragists, aged 19 to 73, were unjustly imprisoned there and were humiliated, kept in inhumane conditions, locked in solitary confinement, and severely beaten. When word leaked out, it was the Turning Point in the battle for suffrage. The memorial opened in May of 2021.

We plan to stop at the Workhouse and the Suffragist Memorial before enjoying lunch/snack at the new Brickmakers Cafe in Occoquan Regional Park. There is outdoor seating on the patio overlooking the Occoquan River. While there are some short unpaved areas, this ride is suitable for a road bike. On our return we will cycle through the new Liberty Complex and then on some paved trails connecting Lake Mercer and Burke Lake.

We will meet at the Burke Lake Park Ice Cream Parlor Parking Lot.   https://goo.gl/maps/psBvxsbeC2MUKdCP7

Ramble? What is? A leisurely tour with combination of roads and the W&OD exploring new places discovered during the pandemic and our old RBC routes.

Still, the average speed of this ride will creep to more than 12 mph but still leisurely. It is a good ride for retired, daytime free, new to cycling, or happy people.

Rides are not held when the forecast for rain is greater than 50% or temperature is below 30o. Ride cancellations will be posted on Social Media.

We are paper-free, which means you can download the route from RidewithGPS and print it before you come, but we will not have paper cue sheets to distribute at the ride

All riders must sign (or have already signed for 2022) a liability waiver. You can do that HERE. The first ride with us is free. We welcome you to join us on subsequent rides as a member. Membership is $25 per year and you can take care of that HERE.
